The story of TC

TastyCakes was born out of the desire to bring people together during special celebrations through quality homemade desserts, no matter the location. Started by Susan Kellerman in 2019, in a small galley kitchen in central Madrid, the mission of TC is to create delicious, simple and authentically American baked goods that taste like home.

In order to achieve our goals, we follow five guiding principles:

  • Taste trumps all: balanced flavor and texture are first and foremost
  • Use seasonal ingredients: quality baked goods are only possible through quality raw ingredients
  • Respect the ingredient: maximize flavor and minimize waste
  • Respect the environment: reduce our carbon footprint through eco-friendly choices
  • Bake personally: connecting with clients helps us bake more love into each treat

We work hard to use locally-sourced ingredients that are as minimally-processed as possible without sacrificing the quality of each baked good.

Susan Kellerman, founder and lead baker

Hi there! I’m Susan and I have been baking nearly my entire life. Growing up in the suburbs of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, as the last of five children in a family of self-taught cooks and bakers, my first lessons in the kitchen took place beside my mom and two sisters. I carried this love of all things food-related into adulthood and through moves across the US and abroad to Tanzania and Spain. While working as a music teacher at the beginning of my career, my curiosity and problem-solving skills led me to hone my baking, regardless of where I lived. This helped me to understand the science of baking better little by little and got me more excited to bake.

In July 2020, I earned my Basic Pastry Certification from Le Cordon Bleu, Madrid campus. There, I learned important basic pastry techniques and skills, which I used to develop my own personal style of rustic, yet elegant traditional American baking. Now, I spend all of my time on baking pursuits. I am dedicated to finding practical substitutions for ingredients that are difficult to find outside of the US and also to continuously improve my baking skills. Even more, after leaving the teaching profession, I am passionate about sharing my knowledge with others to help them increase their own baking confidence.
